Tyrosinase is a key enzyme in melanocytes, potentiating melanin synthesis. Pigment Correct, contains a high concentration of 4 key inhibitors of melanin synthesis: Kojic Acid, Rumex Occidentalis Extract, Nonapeptide-1 and Alpha-arbutin.

In studies, Nonapeptide-1 alone, can inhibit 25-35% of tyrosinase activity and reduce the melanin content of melanocytes by 27-43%. It also interferes with melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) which increases during pregnancy, excessive sun exposure and in certain medical conditions.

A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial comparing Rumex occidentalis 3% cream with 4% hydroquinone cream in epidermal and mixed melasma in Filipino patients (Mendoza et al) concluded that it “is a safe and effective skin-lightening agent for melasma and is comparable in efficacy with 4% hydroquinone cream.

Arctostaphylos Uva Ursi Leaf Extract is also able to tackle pre-existing pigmentation, thus giving it a two-tiered approach. Furthermore, the extract is nutrient-rich and includes oleanolic acid and ursolic acid. Both of these contribute to anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Kojic acid is also an effective anti-oxidant. These ingredients and properties potentiate the depigmenting potential of the formula.
